Among the newer projects that make up the Growing with the Book campaign is Readers’ Challenge, a competition that tests knowledge of the content of books. It is aimed at pupils in the sixth year of primary school and the corresponding year of extended grammar schools. This school-year was chosen as studies indicate that most children today stop being active readers of fiction at around the age of ten. The competition was piloted at the 2010 Book World Prague book fair, and the success of the pilot has been repeated in subsequent years. This year’s (fourth) competition was entered by 43 classes from across the Czech Republic.
The final of Readers’ Challenge 2013 was held at the 19th BookWorld Prague international book fair and literary festival. In a thrilling battle, five class teams of ten members – from Prague, Ivančice, Děčín, Kralupy nad Vltavou and Červené Pečky – answered questions put by host Zdeněk Eška under the supervision of an expert jury.
